Your local early learning centre speaks on the importance of story time with our kids, and the many benefits that come with reading.
Our days get busy and let’s face it, bedtime can often be a rushed process. But finding a little time each day – either at night before bed or lounging around on the weekend – to read with our children is beneficial and rewarding for so many reasons!
1. Improves literacy skills and ability
Reading with your child, and getting your child involved in reading along with you, means they are actively listening to and learning new words, sounds and meanings. As they grow, your child will begin to follow the words as you read them and make connections between letters and sounds. Reading a story with your child also allows them to discover and make new connections between images and words.
2. Teaches them new things
Books are full of interesting facts! Reading stories with your child, particularly educational stories, will open their mind to new worlds, new concepts, and new information. Learning through reading, rather than screens, takes more time and effort for your child, so they can process it and gain knowledge more thoroughly.
3. Improves attention, memory and focus
Both hearing you read and learning to read in the process encourages your child to focus on each letter, word, and page. Reading enables your child to spend time on each word, sounding out each letter and absorbing new information, which they are then able to remember and use in the future.
4. Breaks them away from the screen
Ending screen time is often a battle, but one of the best methods to do so effectively is to introduce your child to a new activity. Reading is a great distraction and is far better for your child’s mental development, especially at night.
5. Helps with a bedtime routine
Reading with your children before bed can help play a role in a solid and regular bedtime routine. Having a specific order put in place before bed significantly helps your child to wind down and get a good night’s sleep. For example, dinner with a bit of screen time, followed by a shower or bath, brushing teeth, then a story in bed.
