Your ELC lists some fun ways you can keep your child learning during the school holidays.
Although school is out, there are many ways that you can keep your child learning, while also allowing them to have fun and enjoy their leisure time. Below are 5 ideas for how you can keep your child’s brain active during the holidays.
Create a reading routine.
Reading with your child is a relaxing, enjoyable way to engage with them while also keeping their mind active. This could take the form of a bedtime story or quiet reading time before a nap. This will help to improve your child’s literacy skills while nourishing their creativity and imagination.
Take a trip out of the house.
A change of scenery can serve as a healthy break from being at home and provides lots of fun educational opportunities. You could explore a museum, visit an art gallery, or take a nature walk. All of these are excellent ways to stimulate your child’s mind and provide some variety to their time away from school.
Take breaks from screen time to play outside.
The internet, movies, and games can be excellent educational tools, however, it is always a great idea to encourage your child to take a break from screens and play outside. This will develop their learning abilities by encouraging independence and exploration. Fresh air and exercise are a plus too!
Teach a new skill.
Extra time at home provides the perfect opportunity to expand your child’s skills. There are endless skills you can teach them including cooking, sewing, knitting, and painting. Teaching new skills provides rich bonding time between you and your child, as well as developing their problem-solving and learning abilities.
Play educational games or movies.
Sometimes rainy days mean that you will need to occupy your child inside the house. Thankfully, there are plenty of educational (but fun!) games and movies available to help keep them learning. Even board games like Scrabble or Monopoly are excellent examples of rainy day activities that require numeracy and literacy skills, as well as creative problem-solving.
