Your ELC explores how the role of kindergarten helps improve your child’s social skills.
Did you know that the relationship children make at childcare or kindy impacts their ability to socialise in later life? Not only are they playing and learning, but your children are also developing important skills for their future while in childcare. In this blog, we explain the aspects that social interaction at Kindy plays in the development of a child’s social skills.
Communication Skills
Kindy provides many opportunities for children to express themselves verbally. It also provides education around when it is appropriate to speak, and when they should be listening. Through activities such as show-and-tell, group discussions or simple conversations, children learn to articulate their thoughts, feelings and ideas better.
We’re sure you’ve heard actions speak louder than words! Childcare and kindy also play a big part in developing your child’s non-verbal communication skills, as they learn to interpret non-verbal cues, such as body language and facial expressions, through their interactions with other children and educators.
Emotional Development
Empathy and understanding are important aspects of social interaction as an adult, and these skills begin forming in kindy. Through shared experiences and discussions, children learn to recognise and respond to the emotions of others, fostering improved emotional intelligence.
Kindy is also one of the first opportunities for children to develop friendships outside of their immediate family. These relationships contribute to the development of important social skills such as trust, loyalty and connection.
Conflict Resolution
Conflict resolution is a necessary skill throughout an individual’s life, and kindy provides one of the first steps in teaching it. This takes the form of social problem-solving.
In kindergarten, children are bound to encounter conflicts and disagreements among each other when playing. With the help of educators, they can learn how to listen to the views of others and develop their problem-solving skills. They can then apply these skills to future disagreements, further improving their emotional intelligence and social skills.
At Your ELC, your child’s social development is a top priority, so we will ensure to help them foster friendships and learn to interact effectively with others.
